“Big Five” Model of Personality
Extraversion is when one engages with others using full energy and positive emotions. They enjoy being around people and work best in teams. Those who are extroverted are known to be friendly, gregarious, excited and cheerful. According to my results, I was ranked at 30 which is low. This indicates that I am more prone to be isolated and reserved with a tendency to only be close with a few people. Agreeableness refers to those who co-operate and understand the needs of others. They have a trusting and compromising nature often resulting to a more submissive attitude in certain situations. I was ranked at 36 which is an average score. This shows that I do take into consideration the needs of others however, I am not willing to fully sacrifice others needs before my own. Conscientiousness refers to those who are dependable and organized. They are self-sufficient, avoid spontaneity and always achieve for the best. My score on this personality is a low score of 27. This indicates that I am spontaneous and like to live in the moment, but I often tend to be careless and disorganized in my work. Neuroticism refers to those individuals who are likely to be more erratic during stressful situations. This often leads them to exhibit emotions such as anger and anxiety. My score for this personality is 55 which tends to be average. With this, I can conclude that I find stressful situations a burden, but I am able to get over it and move on. Openness to Experience refers to intellectual curiosity and being able to take in new ideas and applying it to our everyday lives. Individuals who have a high score for this personality are often liberated, imaginative and artistic. My score is 19 which indicates that I like to think more plainly and simply. Others see me as down-to-earth and practical.
With these results, it has occurred to me that there are many aspects of my personality that need to be altered for me to be successful at school. Having a low extraversion restricts me from interacting with new people which can deter me from forming meaningful relationships. Being able to work as a team includes being interactive with one another and to succeed in group work, it is vital to take on responsibilities and communicate with one another. An average score of agreeableness works to my advantage as it shows that I am willing to understand others needs and take it into consideration, but I also take my own needs into consideration. This leads to a stronger self where I will not be taken advantage of at school and I can step my foot down regarding my own beliefs. I will never do something that I am not comfortable with. With a low score of conscientiousness, it shows my lack of ability to be organized and this often leads to impulsion. It can negatively affect my school work due to carelessness and when entering the job force, it is vital that employees have strategic planned out goals which employers are always seeking when hiring new candidates. Having an average score of neuroticism indicates that even though I stress over unfortunate situations, I can bounce back and continue with work that needs to be completed. This can help me when I am working with other students who are also stressed out by coping with the situation in a less erratic way enabling others to work in a proactive way. With a low openness to experience score, it restricts me from learning new techniques that would be helpful in certain school assignments. Lack of creativity closes many doors to great opportunities as those with low openness to experience are more dogmatic. There are many more disadvantages by limiting yourself to certain experiences.
As a person with low extraversion, conscientiousness and openness to experience, it is important that become more open with people by getting out of my comfort zone and starting a conversation with the person seated next to me in class even if I do not know them. Not only will this let me form more relationships with other people, but it will also develop my communication which is an important skill to have in today’s society. Recognizing my distractions can help me become more conscientious and this can help me concentrate important aspects of my life such as education. With an average score of agreeableness and neuroticism, it gives me a balance in life. Staying consistent in my ways and helping those in need but keeping in mind that it should not take me away from accomplishing my goals will enable me to do good for others as well as for myself. We all get stressed out sometimes but having negative thoughts enables unethical behavior. Being able to consult with a friend about my emotions will help me have an even lower score for neuroticism.
Positive energy refers to those who have positive affectivity and high activation. My score on this was 3.2 which is a little above the average of 3.0. Relaxation refers to those who have positive affectivity and low activation. My score for this was 3.4 which is above the average of 2.6. Negative arousal refers to those who tend to have negative affectivity and high activation. My score for this was 2.0 which is below the average of 2.3. Tiredness has a tendency towards negative affectivity and low activation. My score for this was 3.4 which is above the average of 2.3.
According my results, I concluded that having an average score for positive energy is decent as there is a balance. It uplifts one’s mood and in turn results to better performance when performing school tasks. Positive energy can build confidence which is vital when needing to go to job interviews. My score for relaxation indicates that I have a more discrete way of showing positive emotions. Being more relaxed enables one to be more in control of their emotions and this leads to less stress. People who are more relaxed perform better on school exams and are readier to attend career events and job interviews. I scored relatively low for negative arousal which is a good indicator as it shows that I possess more positive emotions rather than negative ones. Negative emotions impact the way we interact with others and it restricts us from forming good relationships with other students. I have a relatively higher score for tiredness which shows that I have a less demanding way of showing negative emotions. Tiredness can affect our ability to do well and focus on school as it diverts our attention away. It takes a toll on one’s mental and physical health which works as a disadvantage in every aspect of our life.
Ensuring that I continue to focus on what is important will bring out more positive emotions. Maintaining healthy relationships, focusing on my hobbies and my goals will let me achieve a high level of satisfaction. Continuing to be more relaxed has its impacts and finding ways to de-stress through meditation can be helpful when maintaining this emotion. To further develop my ability to keep a lower score for negative arousal, I should continue to remain calm during stressful situations and use other ways to manifest any negative emotions by alleviating my frustrations through working out or confiding in someone who is close to me. To reduce my tiredness, I should stick to a better sleeping schedule and plan to become more organized through writing in a planner.
Being able to rationally think enables one to make decisions based on facts and logic. They do not go with a gut instinct. My score for this decision-making style is 14 which is moderate. Intuitive decision-making relies more on feelings that one may have within themselves. I had a moderate score of 13 for this style of decision-making.
As I have a moderate score for both styles, it gives me more room to be more versatile with certain decisions that I make at school. While it is important to think rationally, it is also important to go with what you feel is right. Having a balance of both styles lets me make decisions based on proof and facts as well as with my beliefs and morals.
To maintain rationality, it is vital to take a step back and think about your actions and the effects it may have on a situation. To maintain intuitively, it is important to go with your gut feeling. For example, if someone in a group project is taking credit for someone else’s work, it would be best to go with what you feel is right and, in my opinion, it would be best to address the person calmly and if that fails, to let the professor know about the situation.
