Era of robotics
When I was a little kid I used to play with a toy robot whom I named as Mr Toto. Mr Toto has a square shape face rectangular hands and legs and wears a metal dress. He is my first memory of a robot. Recently I watched the interview of ‘Sophia’ and it reminded me the movie I have watched in my childhood, “Artificial intelligence”, a story wounded around a humanoid robot named David who has feelings like human and loves his adopted mother. Scientific fiction movies such as Real steel, Transformers painted the image of robots and future era of robotics in our mind.
Beyond the picture in our mind Robot can be defied as automated mobile or fixed manipulator. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO 8373) defined robot as “automatically controlled, re-programmable, multipurpose, manipulator programmable in three or more axes, which may be either fixed in place or mobile for use in industrial automation applications.”
The first reference to the word robot is made in a play by Czech writer Karel Capek in 1921, which defined it as “a worker of forced labor”. After 20 years from that, Isaac Asimov first uses the term ‘robotics’ to describe the technology of robots. He introduces three laws for robotics in his novel “I robot” as below.
1.“A robot may not injure a human being nor through his inaction allow a human being to come to harm”. The second one
2.“A robot must obey the order given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the first law”
3.“A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the first and second laws”
Present day robotic researches are fully based on these three laws in order to assure a well behaved society. These laws always fascinate that the man kind is more important that the artificial robots. Recently robots are integrated with artificial intelligence which allows robot to take their own decisions. The robotic era we’ve watched in movies, is now slowing becoming real.
Fruits of robotics spread over a vast range starting from our home to space in miles away. You may have heard of some world popular robots such “Rover” the Mars exploration robot, “Sophia” a humanoid robot who can animate full range of facial expressions, able to track and recognize people and also hold natural conversations, “Gita” cargo bot is designed to carry our stuff anywhere, the dog robot “Aibo”, who can form an emotional bond with members of the household while providing them with love affection and the joy of nurturing and raising a companion. “Honda E2-DR” robot who has ability to grasp bars, adjust its hips and walk in a human like manner and whilst being flexible strong and water proof as well. These are the recent robot inventions which adds more values to the field of robotics.
The general applications of robotics are, Industrial purposes, medical applications, agricultural purposes, Hazardous Environments such as nuclear energy, mining, under sea explorations, and space explorations even in different planets, military applications, amusement Industry such as Pet robot, Games and for Rescue purposes such as Search survivors in disasters and firefighting.
As the applications spread in a vast range robotics has plenty of advantages. Safety in industry is the most obvious advantage of utilizing robots. Efficiency perfection consistency in work and increased productivity are some other advantages of robotics. A biggest blame on robotics are that stealing the jobs of human but robotics merely changes the jobs that exits. Critical thinking ability of human brain is much more valuable than the human force in present day as the force can be exist by robots. Building robots according to requirement and supervise them with more precise technical knowledge is on human hand. Human might take advantage of additional educational opportunities, utilize their employee wellness program or participate in an innovative workplace projects. So this era step in to a path where all human can enjoy their lives with true value.
In order to welcome the next generation to the robotics era they must be well aware of the subject. Since the childhood a simple touch for robotics might help them to build up their future lives in an amazing way. Future world surely carried out may carrier opportunities in the field of robotics other than all fields as it’s the number one trending in current research field. So robotics for kids is an essential topic to be discussed.in addition to helping kids understand how things work, experimenting with robotics and electronics helps kids to develop problem solving skills and creativity. Other than that, helps to reinforce literacy skills as kids research and record their experiments. The little ideas born in their mind might help them to expose more complex ideas when they are grown up.
A typical robotics learning program includes the knowledge on robotic theories and methods of implementing. Other than that as kids, ethics should be an essential thing to start learning robotics. The real meaning of the main laws of robotics might help them to understand the ethics. In order to make the world a better place with humanity and peace, children should be well aware as the future depends on their hand. If it goes to wrong the world might be full of artificial intelligence without a single drop of humanity.
The idea of ruling the world by robots might real if we do not inject the sensation of humanity to future generation. “AI takeover” is a hypothetical scenario which artificial intelligence becomes the dominant in earth and they take the earth away from human. Without clearly defined goals, robotics era might be an uncomfortable future for mankind as Artificial intelligence, while not inherently evil would become the ultimate optimization process. We have only an imagination of what will it be looks like when robots start fighting other robots. No one will know how the other ones are programmed and no one cannot predict what will happen.
