I love the way film can express anything. When I watch a film I feel like i’m drifting away to a new reality or being transported into another world. It seems as if i’m in the movie and its opening my eyes to new ideas and showing me different perspectives on life. Not every film I watch is like this but a lot of them are and that is one of the things I love about film and why i want to get into film making.

I have been playing hockey since I was four years old. My biggest dream growing was either playing Division 1 hockey or of course playing in the NHL. I’ve been training and practicing for years to be able to play at a college level and last year I made a junior hockey team called the Decatur Blaze. Junior hockey is basically what you play before you play in college and the teams help you get Division 1 scholarships. Anyways last august, three months after I graduated, I packed up all of my things and moved to Illinois by myself to pursue hockey. Living on my own is a lot different from living with my parents. It took a while to get used but now that i’ve been doing it for over six months i feel it has prepared me for what it’s like in the real world where you don’t have your parents by your side fixing every mistake you make, cleaning up your messes, buying groceries etc. Besides my living situation playing on this team has helped me alot to. I have had to work out, train, and practice harder than I ever have in my life. This experience has given me an amazing work ethic and has made me more disciplined. It’s also helped me mature more than i ever would have and has taught me numerous things that I will carry with me the rest of my life.

I have also been involved in the arts for most of my Life. Before i could even walk I was in the dixie chicks music video without you. Then when I was about eight or nine years old I acted in plays for a for years, but I knew that I always wanted to be behind a camera creating a story that would captivate others through watching it by a screen rather than live on stage. I never pursued this dream until I was a sophmore in highschool. I had just transferred schools and I was put into this A/V production class. Once I actually got an understanding of how film making works and I was able to make them It gave me a new outlook on life because i finally knew what I wanted to do in my future, making movies/films.

When I first started learning about film making I studied editing on adobe premiere pro, which is what I still use. I realized that a story is created through the power of editing. You could turn a horror movie into a comedy or do whatever you want with it. The same thing goes with filming a video. The type of camera shots and angles you have are just as important in creating a story and that’s what got me excited and motivated to learn more about it. I’m a very visual learner so I often study professional film makers work, like movies or tv shows even. I pay close attention to how they cut clips, transition between scenes, and also the different camera shots they use. As much as I like editing and filming a video I can never decided which one i’d rather do until i started directing. When I have an idea for a film I can see it all in my head and i know exactly how I want it to be. The director is basically the artistic head above the movie. They have a part in everything that happens like being on set calling action, giving notes on the shots and performance, being a part of the editing process and more. That’s why I someday want to be a movie director because you get to do a little bit of everything and you are in charge. Film making is what I want to do with my life and I want it to start at watkins. I want to be in an environment with other people who are motivated to be filmmakers while working together and collaborating ideas.
