-Character Development

This quote is said by Maddy, the main character of the book. She is learning new thing about herself each day making her realize she is getting stronger physically but also mentally. At the beginning of the book, it talked about how Maddy was extremely week to the point where she could not go outside. By the end of the book, she comes to the realization that she is strong enough to go outside without dying from her disease. Every passing day for Maddy was a new opportunity to live her life and pass milestones she would not have been able to pass without her mental strength. She had a lot of courage because many other people would not risk their lives to go outside.

Analysis

“I’m in an endless field with red poppies. The poppies reach waist-high on single green stocks and are so red they seem to bleed color” (Yoon 247).

-Imagery

This scene is when Maddy and Olly, the boy she likes, escape and go to Hawaii without telling their families. One night while they were there, Maddy had a dream where she was in a field. She sees beautiful red poppy flowers in that field. The poppies were tall, reaching as high as her waist. They had nice, long green stems. While in the field, Maddy see’s the boy she went on vacation with running towards her. Imagery is a vivid description that explains the situation in a way that’s easy for the reader to comprehend and understand. This quote is a good example of imagery because it has many descriptive adjectives that make the scenario feel and sound like you are living though it yourself.

“You learned your lesson the hard way. Some things you just have to experience for yourself” (Yoon 253).

-Theme

This books theme is a lesson. A theme is a subject of talk or topic that part of what the book is about. In this quote, Maddy, the main character, learns her lesson the hard way. Since Maddy has an immune system disease, she is not supposed to go outside. Although she is not supposed to go outside, she decides for herself it would be a great idea to go out to experience what it is like. After she goes outside she has to immediately go to the emergency room to make sure she is okay. There are many occasions in the book where lessons are learned, but Maddy learned her primary lesson from this experience. A reader can take away from this lesson that you should always think about the outcomes before you do something risky, but do not let things scare you too much.

“She took my whole life away from me” (Yoon 294).

-Connection to society 105

This passage of the book talks about connection to society. Connection to society is how a society someone lives in and the society of the book are similar. In the quote, it talks about how Maddy’s mom took her whole life away from her by telling her she had an immune disease. This connects the book to our society because many people have outside sources telling them what they should and should not do. At this day and age in our society you never know how people are going to have an influence on your opinion. People do not deserve to have other people control them. This quote explains over half of our society because so many people are taking others life without even realizing it.

”Were at black rock… In the water, the rocks form a crescent shape that calms the waves and forms a perfect reef for snorkeling” (Yoon 208).

-Personal Connection

52

This quote is an example of personal connection. Personal connection shows how The reader can relate to the text. In this case, I can relate to the text because I went to Hawaii on vacation last spring. In Hawaii I went snorkeling with my family. There is a personal connection here because the main character and I have both gone to Hawaii and been snorkeling. For me it was a great time to relax and not think about school. It was probably the same for her because she got to relax by being outside for the first time and not be stuck inside worry about what’s to come in her life. Also it was both of our first times in Hawaii. We both really enjoyed the trip. Personal connection is shown throughout this because I can relate to a character in the book.

“After that, I had a lot of phone interviews and told my story millions of times” (Hamilton 161).

-Character Development

This quote showing how the main character, Bethany Hamilton, developed. When she was little, she was just like any other young girl. She loved to surf and be an active kid. She never thought she would end up famous and much less end up without an arm. Since she has had so many accomplishments without one of her arms she has become famous. She tells wonderful stories of her journey that at a young age she thought she would never be telling. She also had a movie played about her and she was being interviewed a lot. She went from being any awesome little surfer to getting in an accident and not being able to surf to a famous surfer because of all her accomplishments. She has developed in her career so much since she was little and especially since her accident in 2003.

“I reached over and turned on my lamp switch. My lamp is pretty cool: It has a clear base that i filled with shells. In fact, my whole room is filled with shells. I have a blue shell bedspread, shell necklaces, and boxes overflowing with my shell collection” (Hamilton 5).

-Imagery

This quote is showing imagery because Bethany is explaining the features of her lamp and room. She uses imagery when saying her lamps cool, has a clear base, and it is filled with shells. She also uses imagery when she describes her room by saying she has a blue shell bedspread, shell necklaces and different shells in a box. She is describing what she saw when she woke up in the morning. This is relevant to the story because right from the beginning it is showing how much she loves the ocean and also it’s explaining every detail of the day because it was the day of her accident. The reason her whole bedroom is filled with shells is because she loves the ocean and going surfing. Hamilton uses imagery in this quote because she visually describes what she is seeing in her room when she wakes up in the morning.

“But as skilled as you are, sometimes nature is smarter, stronger, and tougher” (Hamilton 121).

-Theme

This short passage is describing one of the main themes in the book. It is basically saying no matter how good you are at something you are always going to have bad days. This theme is portrayed in the book because Bethany is a very skilled surfer and she always has been, but that does not mean that she never has bad days. Although she has bad days, she keeps trying because surfing is her passion and it’s what makes her happy. A lot of people get discouraged by their bad days and want to quit because they don’t realize bad days happen to the best of us no matter how good you are. Bad days can sometimes be good because they make you stronger both mentally and physically.

“My plans to be a professional surfer got hit pretty hard on that Halloween morning” (Hamilton 206).

-Society Connection

This quote connects the book to our society today because many people have big plans in there life that get ruined. Many people have goals that they want to achieve, but don’t or can’t. Not everyone’s plans are to be a professional surfer, but almost everyone has a plan they are trying to follow. Some peoples plans are achieved easily and others can come crashing down in a matter of minutes. Not everyone has the courage like Bethany to get back up and try again. Most people get too discouraged that it didn’t work the first time so they don’t try again. A plan or goal is something you should try your best to reach and when you are stuck you have to keep trying instead of taking the easy way out.

“I am grateful for every single person God has put in my life and I thank him for each and everyone of you” (Hamilton 3).

-Personal Connections

I can relate to this quote because I truly am very grateful for everything and every person God has put in my life. Even though sometimes I get mad at people I still care tremendously about them. I wouldn’t be this far in my life without all the people in it. My friends”,family, and teachers all lead me in the right direction to where I want to end up when I’m older. I have not enjoyed every single person God has put in my life, but they have shaped me into a better person. To be able to be grateful for someone you have to start each day with an open mind rather than thinking of how this person could hurt you or make your life worse.

Analysis

”He tried to squeeze out some childhood memory that should tell him whether London had always been quite like this. But it was no use, he could not remember: nothing remand of his childhood except a series of bright lit tableaux, occurring against no background and mostly unintelligible” (Orwell 3).

-Character Development.

This quote is showing how the main character, Winston Smith, developed. When he grew up he seemed to remember very little from his childhood. One thing he thinks he remembers is him being happy. He wasn’t 100% sure that was what happened because it was along time ago and he might have forgotten what his life was like. Now he feels unhappy and is in a dark place. He is unhappy because at that time period the world was not at or close to peace. If Winston has remembered his past correctly he has developed from being a happy young child to an unhappy, depressed adult. Winston was fully taken care of as a child and now as an adult he doesn’t know what tomorrow will be like because of the time period the book is placed in.

Analysis

“The hallway smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats. At one end of it a colored poster, too big for indoor display, had been tackled to the wall. It depicted simply an enormous face more than a meter wide: the face of a man about forty-five, with a heavy black mustache and ruggedly handsome features” (Orwell 1).

-Imagery

This quote is showing imagery because it is describing the scenery. First It starts off by explaining what the hallway smells like. Then is talks about how there is a picture on one end of the hallway. At the end, it talk about what the guy on the painting looks like and describes features of the guys face. This passage of the book is being said when Winston Smith, the main character of the book, walks into the hallway. It is describing what he saw and what he smelt. Imagery helps the reader get a better understanding of what’s going on in the book because they can make a visual picture in there head of what’s going on. This is imagery because it is what is visually being described by the character.

“Freedom is slavery” (Orwell 264).

-Theme

Freedom is slavery is one of the main themes that is brought up quite a bit in the novel “1984”. It basically means the same thing as war is peace and ignorance is strength. It is also saying because of slavery we have freedom. We have to fight for good and what we want. Freedom doesn’t come to us for no reason. There is a reason why America if a free country and that’s because we had to live with slavery and no peace in our country for years. America fought for freedom and they achieved it. This books setting was during the period of time where there was a lot of slavery in the world. Many of the people lived by this saying knowing freedom would come, but they had to get through slavery first.

“Before man there was nothing. After man if he could come to an end, there would be nothing. Outside man there is nothing” (Orwell 265).

-Society connection

This quote connects to the society today because men have more power. This quote is basically saying without men there is nothing. In the years past it has been way worse, but it is still happening today. There are just specific things women are not to do that men are supposed to do. There are not many now, but in the nineteenth century men had way more rights than women. At this point in the society, this quote does not represent the US as much, but more of the poorer countries. People have started to realize how unfair they were treating women and it has helped our society grow. All societies in the world relate to this still a little, but thankfully most of the gender inequality has gone away.

“The little girl imitating her brother in every movement” (Orwell 23).

-Personal connection

This quote relates to me because I have imitated my older brothers movements many times. I can be very irritating to my older brother when I want to be. One of the ways I irritate him is by imitating what he does. It is not so much anymore because I’m getting older and becoming more mature, but I definitely related to this when I was a little girl. I know this is very common way for all younger sibling to act toward his or her older siblings. My little brother did it to me to. It is just an easy way to get attention when your little and that’s what all little kids want. Overall, this quote probably shares connection with many people as a child not just me.

Analysis

”I was overwhelmed with happiness. All hurt and frustration fell away and I finally blazed with joy” (Martel 234).

-Character development

This quote is showing how the character develops throughout the story. The main character, Pi, was the one who developed the most in the story. When he went out to sail he was very afraid and didn’t want to be out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean like him and his family were. He did not have a choice to stay back though, his only option was to go sailing with his family on the Pacific Ocean. This quote is showing Pi developing out of his fear. It was not easy for him, it took almost the whole seven months he was out sailing to feel happiness. Luckily for the ending Pi is happy and safe living his life back on the ground rather than at sea terrified that he was not coming back.

”It was a large bird with a pure snowy white body and wings that were jet-black at her tips and rear edges. It’s big, bulbous head had a very pointed orange-yellow beak and the red eyes behind the black mask made it look like a thief who had a very long night” (Martel 371).

-Imagery

This quote is an example of imagery. It is describing the bird that Pi saw. The quote is saying the bird is large and very white. The bird has very black wings, a big head, with a very pointy orange-yellow nose and red eyes. In this quote, the author uses enough descriptive words that I can make out a picture in my head of what the bird looks like. All this is giving the reader a visual description of what the bird looks like. Imagery uses more descriptive words to help the reader have a better understanding of what they’re reading about and makes the story come to live more. Imagery can be describing anything as long as it gives the reader a visual description of what’s going on.

”Life is so beautiful that death has fallen in love with it, a jealous, possessive love that grabs at what is can” (Martel 6).

-Theme

This quote is showing one of the main themes portrayed in the novel. When the quote says life is so beautiful that death has fallen in love with it; it means that death can be so close and it can ruin something beautiful like life. This quote comes into the story because Pi’s family was killed for absolutely no reason. Some guys on the boat that Pi and his family got on killed Pi’s mother. And he killed the tiger that was with Pi for food. Life is too beautiful to let go of for silly reasons. They could have found another way to get food rather than killing an animal. This quote, really points out a big and sad part of the story.

”To look out with idle hope is tantamount to dreaming one’s life away” (Martel 169).

-Society connection

This quote is connecting our society to the book. The quote is talking about how many people wish there life away. If something is bad in a person’s life they often times wish for it to be a few day or hours in the future. Many people probably do it without even noticing. Even things as simple as school people tend wish away. If we could actually time travel to where we wanted people who are about fifteen would probably be at least thirty by now, maybe even a few years older. It happens to everyone when there in a situation they do not like. Rather than wish there life away people should just be thankful for there life because it’s way too short to wish away.

”I don’t know much about politics” (Martel 27).

-Personal connection

This quote can relate to me because I don’t know much about politics. I am not really history person so I don’t really care that much about politics. I am also pretty young to have to worry about what’s going on with politics. I do enjoy watching the news to hear about what’s going on in the world, but they do not talk much about politics. It just sounds like such an old person topic and I don’t care about what’s happening as long as it does not affect me. Children and teens do not have to deal with politics yet so there’s no reason to know a lot about them. I can connect to this quote because I do not know much about politics.
