Personal Response: In the poem “The Pig” by Roald Dahl, there is a lot of Figurative languages. This poem has an interesting twist of anthropomorphism. In this poem, there is a pig which is normal in all ways except for his brain. Dahl explains how he could math and understand complex ideas. But he doesn’t understand one question, “What was the reason for his birth?/Why was he placed upon this earth?/His giant brain went round and round” (Dahl, line 13-15). Then later he realizes, “They want my bacon slice by slice/’To sell at a tremendous price! /’They want my tender juicy chops/’To put in all the butcher’s shops! /’They want my pork to make a roast/’And that’s the part’ll cost the most! /’They want my sausages in strings! /’They even want my chitterlings! /’The butcher’s shop!/The carving knife! /’That is the reason for my life! ‘” (Dahl, lines 20-30). He learns pigs have no value essentially except as food. Also, we can see the pig is worth more in pieces than together. This isn’t a pleasant thought for a pig so the next day he ate his owner. “He ate him up from head to toe”,/Chewing the pieces nice and slow./It took an hour to reach the feet”,/Because there was so much to eat, (Dahl, lines 41-44).“’I had a fairly powerful hunch’/That he might have me for his lunch. And so, because I feared the worst”,/I thought I’d better eat him first.” (Dahl, lines 49-52). If the pig just continued with his life and had not eaten the farmer. The farmer with has eaten him with no worries either. Is it wrong for the pig to eat the farmer or the farmer to eat the pig?

This poem left me with some questions. If the pig was so smart and everyone knew, would the farmer really eat the pig? What happens to the pig after he ate his farmer? Was he sent to jail? Was he left alone? The author’s objective is to influence the reader to identify with the farmer and to empathize with the pig. Most of this poem makes me think about, survival of the fittest. The pig was left with no option but to eat the farmer as that was the only way he could save himself. Dahl also shows on the grounds that the pig is humankind with its flaw of insatiable, presumption, and aspiration. As humans are at the top of the food chain, we don’t consider the thoughts of others before we eat different creatures. In the situation of a pig eating a human without regret, it enables us to see the blunder in our ways.

Personal Response: The book Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac is a personal anecdote told by a Navajo Marine explaining to his grandson how he got a medal. The use of an anecdote strengthens the meaning of the story. It helps us understand how it feels to be part of World War II. It makes us understand what hardships he went through as an Indian. This anecdote adds emotion and character to the story. It shows how he makes friends and how he advances in his story. This book has a positive connotation on Navajo and makes me want to learn more about them. It shows how he always had to constantly train, never getting a break. He tells how they had to wait 60 years before they were recognized. As a retired veterinarian, most marines got extra goods. For example, they were allowed to build homes for free, but Indians were not allowed to. This is only one of the ways they are not treated fairly.

The text is mainly about Navajo marines and how they played an important role in world war two. The story is focused on the life of Ned in the first person way. In the story, he explains major events in his life starting with boarding school till World War II. The author explains how he has ably overcome discrimination. To join the army you had to speak fluent English and because of boarding school, he could speak English better than most white boys his age. In a nutshell, the most important thing he did was create a code for the American army. This code was used to be used to send important messages across the battlefield. The Ned code had to be new and always evolving to prevent the enemy from decoding it. Nobody was permitted to keep anything on which the code was composed. He was part of many main victories for the Americans. Ned was sent to different islands in Hawaii. Ned was also assigned to a gathering of Marines and was among the individuals who attacked Bougainville, Japan, that was one of the main strongholds. In the end, Ned was part of Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima. At the point when the war at last finished, Ned was among one of the first to be recognized with a congressional gold medal since he was a Code Talker.

Personal Response: In book Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac There is a lot of symbolism. Take example the cornflower in medicine bags. Cornflower is said many times throughout the story. For example, on page 110 “ I reached down to touch my buckskin pouch filled with corn pollen.” The corn pollen is made for protection. They harvest this pollen in the summer and only blessed corn pollen can be used for protection. The reason they use corn pollen is that corn is a staple food for Indians. It is their sustenance, the reason they are able to thrive and survive. They use corn pollen as protection as without it their families will cease to exist. It shows Ned’s link to his heritage. We can tell by this how religious he is. Even as a senior “I still travel with my medicine bag in my pocket”.

This story reminds me of my mother. She is a very religious person. No matter where ever my mother is she will spend some time before bed to pray. She is always praying for our well being. It is these type of people who are calm and are always in peace. Take example Gandi. He was a devoted Indian. He spent his time ensuring peace amongst all the people of India. These are people who are looked up to, just like Ned. He and all Navajo are some of the people that I look up to. The part where he is calm even when they are loosing reminds me of my father. He is never agitated or afraid. He is always the one to lead the team and make sure everything goes according to plan.

The article “Should college athletes play for free?” by Noack and Kusler is in a nonfiction article in a compare and contrast format. The pro in this article is that athletes should not get paid, while the cons are they should get paid. In this article, we can tell the authors had thought that athletes should get paid. Although the author never stated directly that college athletes should be paid. The main points in the con section are very strong. The author stated “As athletes, [they]… work long hours each day. They work something similar to a full-time job on top of trying to navigate college” (35-36 Noack and Kusler). They have to play for the school, attend practices, do their homework, and attended classes. They work very hard. They also make “Hundreds of millions of dollars flow to universities” (43 Noack and Kusler). This money is used to by supplies and academics for the school. They should get at least part of what they contribute to their college. In the Pro section, the author stated many athletes get scholarships for college. The yearly cost for a college is near 50″,000 dollars not including interest if they get a loan. In this way, they sort of do get paid.

I believe college athletes should not get paid. As Noack and Kusler said they do sometimes receive full scholarships which can be a lot of money. Also, colleges can not afford to pay athletes. If they were to pay them the college prices would go up severely. This would not be fair for the people who have absolutely no interest whatsoever in sports. And to add to that college is a place to learn. What if you are good at baseball but you tried physics and you loved it. Playing for your college team is a privilege. Only 2% of the kids who go to college play on the team. The main reason students play for their college team is that they love the sport. They play for the fun of it and not to earn some extra money. Paying students will eventually lead to cuts elsewhere causing the school to fall apart. We must not pay college athletes for the sake of all colleges.
