This is evident in the change from using chalkboards to smart boards and how the use of tablets and chrome-books has been adopted as an alternative to pens and paper. Soon the use of virtual reality education will be common phenomena in classrooms. It is therefore sensible to make use of technology in the education process. This can be achieved through the use of the blended approach to learning. This will involve the combination of computer aided learning such as virtual reality and traditional forms of learning. This approach to teaching will be able to cater for the diverse needs of all students. Virtual reality will confer an array of benefits to the education system. Through virtual reality, the student will be exposed to a different world and achieve a higher level of understanding and this will all be achieved in the classroom (Freina & Ott, 2015). Students have different paces of understanding; some are avid visual learners while others are better suited for a hands on learning approach. Virtual reality will make it possible to bridge the gap between these students. Virtual reality can be achieved in the classroom through several means. One such method is through the use of the traditional desktop setup where the student is exposed to a virtual environment via input devices such as a keyboard, mouse or controller (Martín-Gutiérrez, Añorbe-Díaz, 2017, P. 471). Another means is by trying to achieve full immersion and the student will be required to wear a head mounted display (HMD) accompanied by a data glove that will facilitate interaction in the virtual environment (Martín-Gutiérrez, Añorbe-Díaz, 2017, P. 473). A tracking system will be put in the head mounted display to record and analyze how the student interacts in the virtual environment. The tracking system will also affect what the student sees in the virtual environment in response to any movements by their head as this results in changes in perception. Virtual reality proves to be a great tool in helping students who respond better to computer generated teaching techniques as opposed to traditional teaching methods. The students can interact with objects in the virtual environment to get a better understanding of them. The virtual reality not only applies to objects but also enables students to interact with data sets and concepts that were previously inaccessible. Virtual reality has a variety of benefits to the education system. Once such benefit is that it provides students with exceptional visualizations that can’t be achieved in the traditional classroom. Virtual reality allows students to explore different realities and thus have a variety of experiences for example, it would be impossible to transport students to visit the ancient ruins of Greece but through the use of virtual reality it may be possible. This high quality visualizations create strong emphasis on students through the experiences unlike those in traditional teaching methods. Virtual reality naturally makes learning interesting for students as it has been discovered that students prefer watching something to reading it. This is because virtual reality creates interesting experiences that students can’t have in real life and this tends to motivate students to learn. Additionally, student’s engagement in the classroom will be markedly improved through the use of virtual reality. Most students will be motivated to share their experiences in the virtual environment with the rest of their classmates thus making it easier for teachers to create productive engagement in their classrooms. Virtual reality makes the learning process fun for students. This is an important factor in the education process as people are naturally inclined to enjoy doing things that they feel are fun, interesting and require minimal exertion; this is the same for students. By making learning fun for students they will become more curious and ambitious. Virtual reality will help to eliminate language barriers in the education process. Normally if students want to pursue education in a different country they will be forced to first have an understanding of the foreign language which may prove to be cumbersome and difficult. Virtual reality technology will help eliminate this barrier by translating the foreign language into a language that students can understand. This will be achieved through the incorporation of language translation into the software. Also the virtual reality visualizations can be experienced in any language thus contributing to the elimination of the language barrier. An added advantage to the adoption of virtual reality to the learning process is that it facilitates the social integration of students who may have different learning needs and styles. It has been observed that students who experienced difficulty in being accepted in various social groups were able to integrate into groups thanks to their skills in technology. Although virtual reality presents quite a lot of benefits to the education process it also does have some drawbacks. One such disadvantage is that it results in poor human connections. Virtual reality involves interaction between the student and software only which may consequently result in students developing poor human relationships. This is in contrast to traditional learning techniques that involve creating interpersonal connections between students and teachers. Another drawback of virtual reality is that it presents a great lack of flexibility in the classroom. Traditionally, students in the classroom are able to ask questions and get answers to their questions; virtual reality on the other hand provides a totally different experience. If a student is using specific software programmed to work in a specific way, the student can’t present any questions. Like any other piece of technology, there may be issues in the functionality of the virtual reality software or equipment. In case the system fails, the student’s education is brought to a halt till it’s fixed. This greatly inconveniences the student and also it may be prove very expensive to fix the system and may strain school budgets. Students may also end up becoming addicted to the virtual environment. As evidenced by the strong addiction that video games and strong experiences have had on people, this may also occur in the case of virtual reality technology. Virtual technology creates strong experiences and if students find them to be better than their real experiences then they may find themselves becoming addicted to the virtual world. Incorporating virtual reality into the education system may prove to be very expensive. It will cost a lot of money to expand this system of education to reach all students. Also, this could lead to inequality in education as this virtual reality trend will become accessible to rich students leaving out the poor ones. In conclusion, the incorporation of virtual reality trends into the education system will come with an array of benefits to students. Despite these benefits, it will also prove important to find a way to mitigate the drawbacks that come with the use of this technology.
